2nd wave numbers rising much faster, daily cases close to 90k – ET HealthWorld

New Delhi: A day after crossing the 80,000 mark, India’s daily Covid-19 case count rose to just around 1,000 short of 90,000, with 88,988 fresh infections recorded in the last 24 hours, the highest since September 26. Friday’s count was within 10,000 of the highest single-day tally of cases recorded in the country.

Such has been the surge in infections during the pandemic’s second wave that daily cases crossed 80,000 just 20 days after going past the 20,000 mark. The daily tally had crossed 20,000 on March 12 and hit 80,000 on April 1. The rise was three times faster than the corresponding increase during the first wave, when it took 64 days for cases to rise from the day the tally first crossed 20,000 (June 27, 2020) till the day 80,000 cases were recorded (August 30).

The highest daily tally of fresh cases recorded in India was 98,795 on September 17.

The daily death toll continued to be above 400 for the third day running as 434 fatalities were recorded on Friday. Maharashtra reported 202 deaths, followed by 57 in Punjab, 43 in Chhattisgarh, 16 each in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and 14 each in Kerala and Delhi.

On Friday, as many as 17 states recorded their highest daily surge in cases this year, with three logging all-time peaks. These included Maharashtra, which added as many as 47,827 cases, more than half of the national total, with Mumbai reporting a record rise of 8,844 infections. Madhya Pradesh logged its highest daily count of 2,777, becoming the fifth state to record an all-time high case tally in the first two days of April alone. Gujarat posted another new high of 2,640 cases.

In Karnataka, 4,991 more people were detected with the Covid-19 infection in the last 24 hours, the highest in a day since October 23. Delhi logged 3,594 new infections, the biggest rise since December 4. Tamil Nadu’s daily tally went past the 3,000 mark, as 3,290 cases were reported on Friday, the highest since October 19.
